About the TBF Avenger

The Grumman TBM-3 Avenger was one of the most important torpedo bombers used by the United States Navy during the Second World War. Designed by Grumman and later produced in large numbers by General Motors, the Avenger was a rugged and versatile aircraft that could carry torpedoes, bombs, and rockets on a wide range of missions. It served on many American aircraft carriers across the Pacific and played an important role in naval strike operations, anti shipping patrols, and close support missions. The TBM-3 variant represented one of the later wartime versions and featured improvements that allowed it to carry additional weapons and equipment.

One of the carriers that operated Avengers late in the war was the Essex class aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill. Commissioned in 1943, the ship served with the fast carrier task forces that launched large scale strikes against Japanese forces in the Pacific. Aircraft from Bunker Hill took part in several major operations including the campaign for Okinawa in 1945. During this battle the carrier was heavily damaged by two kamikaze aircraft, which caused severe fires and heavy casualties. Although badly damaged, the ship survived the attack and returned to the United States after the war.

The Academy 1/48 scale TBM-3 Avenger USS Bunker Hill kit recreates one of these late war carrier aircraft in detailed plastic form. The kit is based on the well known Accurate Miniatures tooling and is widely regarded for its high level of accuracy and engineering.
